I recently came across a story about Carlos Wilson, a 75-year-old door man who works at the Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The interesting thing about this man is that he has worked in the same place since May of 1938, nearly 60 years and no one can remember him ever taking a sick day in all that time. He has "done it all" at the Cavalier. He has been grounds keeper, an elevator man, a dishwasher, dining room captain, valet and beverage manager. He has befriended thousands over the years, been personal valet to the great entertainers like Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and even chatted with several different presidents. People on vacation will drive three or four hours out of their way just to spend five minutes with Wilson.
What a tribute to loyalty, service and commitment! In a day of downsizing, layoffs, high employee turnover, it is so good to hear of people committed to something; that stay with it, even in tough times.
In the daily walk of the believer, Christ calls us to be loyal and committed to each other and to Him. It reminds me of the words of the old spiritual that says, "He'll be finding me hoeing cotton when He comes." When Christ comes, early or late, I want to be busy in His service to whatever He has called me to do, don't you? God has called us, each one of us, to serve him with our various gifts and abilities; to honor Him with our lives. What are you doing right now that honors Christ and faith in Christ? Do others see you and are able to say, "there goes a Christian!" Are you growing in your faith? Are you stronger now more than last year, last month, last week? When Jesus comes again, will you and I be "on the job" or not? Spiritually speaking, my prayer for all of us is that we will always be on the job. Rain, sleet or shine, He will find us, stationed at our post, doing His will. Amen!? "Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love." (1 Corinthians 16:13)
