Thursday, November 6, 1997 will go down in the history books, according to former President George Bush, as one of the highest moments in his life. They were all there to help him dedicate the George Bush Library at Texas A&M University. Among the distinguished guests were the children of former presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Nixon, many foreign diplomats, former first ladies, Nancy Reagan and Lady Bird Johnson, former presidents Ford and Carter and President Bill Clinton and first lady, Hillary.
One by one, they all spoke of the life and career of George Bush, of his determination, his diplomacy, his integrity, his commitment to the nation and people of the United States. I believe it was President Ford who spoke of this day as a "celebration of a life of service" to his country.
When Bush got up, he commended many who had helped him over the years. He summed up his life, finally, by saying that of all the achievements, the three that he cherished the most still remained with him---"a husband, a father and a grandfather!" Once again, the simple becomes the most profound. What really counts in this life?
Christian people, as well, must be reminded that it really doesn't matter if we get a library named after us or not. It matters not whether dignitaries ever speak well of our name. But what does matter is whether or not we live a life of service to Christ. It matters eternally what God thinks of us.
What will he say when our life is over? "Well done good and faithful servant…Come you who are blessed of my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world," or "Depart from me you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels...Then, they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." (Matthew 25:23-46).
Christian, what will it be?--celebration or condemnation? Serve the Lord and serve Him for life! Amen!?
