CHROMOSOME-22

Scientists all over the worlds are abuzz with the recent publication in Nature magazine concerning the complete genetic "mapping" of chromosome-22. The Sanger Centre in Cambridge, UK worked with researchers from around the world in order to finally decipher the entire genetic code of this human chromosome. Although # 22 is one of the smallest, it is also one of the most significant since it contains genes linked to thirty-five diseases and syndromes including some cancers, schizophrenia, deafness and heart disease.

This "intimate knowledge" of this chromosome and its subsequent publication has been hailed as being as significant as the Bible itself, since for the first time in history this has ever been accomplished. It will, in all probability, pave the way for new treatments of heart disease and many other illnesses.

What is even more significant, however, is that it further drives man to recognize that there is order in the cosmos. Intelligent minds must be driven to the facts of evidence that points to design, then to a Designer. It could never have been a "chance" happening considering the 545 genes and 33 million base pairs in this one chromosome alone!

I am reminded of a passage in which King David was in awe over the fact that his God not only cared for, but knew him intimately, to the minutest detail -"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:13-16).

Now that's intimate knowledge!
