GROUND ZERO

In John Eldredge's new book, "Wild At Heart," the author gives a grim word picture of what occurred on D-Day during World War II:

"It's June 6, 1944, about 0710. You are a soldier in the third wave onto Omaha Beach. Thousands of men have gone before you and now it is your turn. As you jump out of the Higgins boat and wade to the beach, you see the bodies of fallen soldiers everywhere-floating in the water...you have to admit, 'this is one brutal war…'"

On September 11, 2001 war was waged on America. This time it was not in the trenches of a Normandy beach, but in office buildings in New York and Washington, D.C.-our home! We watched in horror as firemen and rescue workers knelt in prayer over a recovered body as they stood in the rubble of what once was the World Trade Center. It looked like a war zone. They called it "Ground Zero."

As terrible an event that 9-11 was, there is, however, a battle that's being waged in our land that has far worse implications. It is the battle over the hearts and souls of people. I believe we ought to be concerned and prayerful over the tyranny of terrorism, but shouldn't we be even more concerned over the war being waged each and every day for those who are near to us-family and friends that are losing the battle through broken homes, alcohol, hatred, promiscuity and pride. This battle is just as real.

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." -Ephesians 6:10-12.

So, then, soldier, put on that helmet and take up your sword!
