There were plenty of cheers when the official groundhog handlers held up Phil,
the newest ground hog in the 113th annual prediction.
Thousands of people waited through the cold rainy night in Punxsutawney, PA just to get a glimpse of the little rodent. When he didn't see his shadow, according to legend, it meant that spring was just around the corner.
According to the Associated Press, "Groundhog Day is rooted in the German superstition that if an animal casts a shadow on Feb. 2- the Christian holiday
of Candlemas-bad weather is coming."
What is interesting to me is that during some years, Phil has had some help "predicting" the weather. In years past, club members voted the night before whether or not Phil would see his shadow, rain or shine. On one occasion, they even set off fireworks to simulate a sunrise and claimed that he had seen his shadow.
Aren't you glad that our lives as Christians aren't directed and ordered on the whim
of our Creator? Isn't it good to know that our blessings now and our future existence
aren't dependent on the superstitions of a rodent!
What a comfort and assurance to know that our Lord is the "same, yesterday, today and forever!"(Hebrews 13:10).
He does not change his mind with the weather, nor do the whims or desires of man affect him. He is trustworthy, always and forever! You can count on Him!
"All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever." (1 Peter 1:24)
There are no fireworks, no clouds, sunshine or midnight votes to determine His will.
He simply speaks a word, gives a promise and then faithfully fulfills it.
What an awesome God we serve!
