It was appropriate that our town dedicate a monument to the late Chief of Police, James Mumford. His dedication as a public servant has been talked about and mentioned wherever people gather ever since that fateful day on November 15, 1963. It was on that day that he was shot and killed in the line of duty as he served to protect and defend our fair city.
Many epithets could be added to the monument that now decorates the entrance into the Elgin police station. However, the one that is written is fitting, "for the great sacrifice he made to keep the public safe…" The Courier noted that his daughter "remembers that he gave the ultimate sacrifice."
Indeed, it would do us all a great deal of good to remember this Memorial Day all those who have given the "ultimate sacrifice" in the line of duty to defend the many freedoms we have as Americans.
There was another who gave the "ultimate sacrifice" for our spiritual freedom. He gave more than any G.I. ever did. He came to a foreign soil and gave His life to save a lost and dying world. His name was Jesus and he as well asks us to remember. Each Lord's day when we gather he calls us to remember his sacrifice and our relationship with Him, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me."-1 Corinthians 11:25. You won't forget to remember, will you?
